The Oscars

I know I’ve said it before – but I’m just not that into awards shows. As someone who can barely sit through a movie, awards shows tend to test my patience (plus, once I’ve seen all the incredible styling there is st see – I’m done!).

That being said, I was really impressed with several moments from last night’s Oscar’s. Let’s begin with Reese Witherspoon – she promoted the #askhermore campaign, which essentially makes all my worlds collide. While I love seeing what styles the stars are wearing, I have no idea why it is necessary to ONLY ask them about “who” and “what” they are wearing. Reese also posted several example questions of what reporters could ask to learn more about actress’s thoughts about their work, aspirations, and proudest moments. Thanks to The Representation Project for ensuring our women are given the respect they deserve for their craft.

She was not the only celebrity to ensure women were receiving the positive attention they deserve. Props to Patricia Arquette for calling out that dreadful “mani-cam” that E! luckily didn’t have space for on the red carpet this year. The Boyhood star said she was “too busy working on an ecological sanitation project” to get her nails done for the awards show. Yeah girl – preach!

The fashion-loving, women’s and gender studies-learning, journalistic-soul in me is just simply over the moon.

And can we take a moment to touch on what my Facebook newsfeed is blowing up over? Lady Gaga gave Carrie Underwood (and dare I say it – Julie Andrews? No. Let’s not go there.) a run for her money on a birch lined, symphony-filled stage as she hit ev’ry single high note in her tribute to “The Sound of Music.”

Love her music, think she’s a total nut, but holy cow – the girl is talented. Top off her talented performance with that incredible full-skirted white Azzedine Alaïa gown. Just breathtaking.

Of course I can’t stop there, because there were several favorite dresses from last night. I was shocked to see an absence of pant-suits or capes, but I suppose my favorite trends can’t come back for every awards show.

A favorite, texture-filled gown (although God only knows how the girl sat down) was Lupita N’yongo in a fully pearl encrusted Calvin Klein. As someone who has worn liquid beading, I can bet this puppy weighed roughly 20 pounds. She pulled it off like a champ – I’ve yet to see her in anything I didn’t like!

Emma Stone wowed in a chartreuse, long-sleeved Elie Saab. With her skin tone and red hair, it was a winner. Cate Blanchett had, in my opinion, the most incredible statement necklace by Tiffany’s and selected a much simpler dress by John Galliano for Maison Margiela. Jennifer Lopez wore an amazing Haute Couture Elie Saab gown which not only complemented her skin tone, but matched it perfectly. Jennifer Aniston stunned in a fully beaded Versace, and Reese Witherspoon – that Tom Ford gown was impeccable.

But my favorite after-party look was worn by Mindy Kaling in a custom Savador Perez. The girl doesn’t do basic black very often, but when she does, she does it perfectly.

While I’m not the biggest awards show fan, I’m marrying a former theatre-kid who was recalling the days of watching the awards shows with his buddies. Of course, I’m not one to turn down the opportunity to host a party, so next year should be filled with many, many awards show watch-parties!

:: Rule Breaker ::

No peeking at Christmas presents. No white after Labor Day. No licking the batter. No reading in the dark

Some rules were made to be broken, right? Down here in Dallas, it’s hotter than the Fourth of July. Which is why anyone who tells me that I cannot wear white after Labor Day is probably not meant to be my friend. If that were true, who in tarnation would get married after Labor Day?

Half the people I associate with, which is one of the many reasons we are friends!

So today my dear friends, readers, people from Hong Kong who can’t understand my random slang via Google translate: I challenge you to eat cake for breakfast! Don multiple chains in the name of high fashion! WEAR WHITE AFTER LABOR DAY!

Because, we can.

And be happy – because today is the day that Napa meets its match! Looking forward to sharing this adventure with you! Also – send a prayer up for me on Saturday. Taylor thinks we will actually make it to SEVEN wineries.

I die. Insert boggled emoji face here.

:: Dallas Cowgirl ::

Let’s first clarify that I am not claiming to be a Texan. I suppose it’s kind of like the first time you refer to your college residence as “home,” when on the phone with your mom. You are promptly reminded that the city you currently live in is not “home.” It will never be “home,” because let’s be honest – home is where your mom is.

Now, do I love Dallas? Yes. Surprisingly, I’m far more attached to it than I was to Tulsa, but perhaps have not met it with the same admiration I had for Oklahoma City. To be frank, a lot of that had, and currently has, to do with the exact part of town I get to claim as my little piece.

This little part, my neck of the woods city, has quaint homes, quiet sidewalks, and a dover of ducks. Seriously – loads of them and the cutest ducklings! I’m just removed enough from downtown (too much for me), and uptown (if you’re feelin 22), but a quick run to my favorite shops is not far enough to be out of the question.

People are friendly, everyone has a dog, and no one has seemed to mind too much that I am using their front porch as a photo op. However, I do have one neighbor who runs outside to frighten the ducks off his lawn, only to go back inside as they settle in on his green grass for the day. He then returns to his stationary bicycle – which can of course be seen through the front window

So, here I am in my new cowgirl-esque booties –  fit for an Oklahoma soul who still dresses up as a Dallas cowgirl from time to time.

:: Palm Trees + Eighty Degrees ::

More than a year ago, Taylor’s mom sent me a photo of a dress that she immediately knew was right up my alley.

The white sleeveless dress from Zara boasted the brightest, multi-colored palm trees scattered across it. Without a Zara in Oklahoma, and knowing their sizes can run a bit funky, I let my neon dream go.

Until I just so happened to stumble upon it on Sheinside, and ordered it for a whopping $28! At that price, I could order three and it wouldn’t be the same amount as the one from Zara. Needless to say, it came in and I loved it.

Moral of the story: If you don’t mind waiting 2-3 weeks, can measure yourself in centimeters, and understand fabrics well enough to know what will and will not look cheap/be see through, you can always order from a rando website in Hong Kong.

:: Put the Lime in the Coconut ::

Remember that time I went to Mexico? Yep, we are still on those photos.

I was lucky enough to score this dress on major sale from J.Crew back in August, and have since been wearing it non-stop. It has a great sack-style fit, plus pockets. I’ve belted it, stacked jewelry on it, and toned it down with neutrals. Still can’t decide if it is lime green or yellow, but considering I own one piece of yellow (see previous cover-up), we’re going to call it green.

The sun was so gorgeous the night we took these photos, but the light just wouldn’t cooperate. Or maybe we are both just still amateurs when it comes to understanding the right setting for the camera. Imagine how bright you think this dress might be, then multiply it by 1,000 times the brightness of the sun. The only game changer here would be if it glowed in the dark… WHY DOESN’T IT GLOW IN THE DARK?!

Personally, I think T just liked it because it reminds him of the bright yellow tone of highlighter which littered his law school books. No love lost over those days here!

:: Mellow Yellow ::

We are still on vacation photos… because we can. My favorite day in Cabo was the day that we did absolutely nothing. Seriously – nothing!

After breakfast with our favorite waiter, we headed out to the pool to be the wildest people there. If you know the four of us, you clearly understand that we collectively average about eighty-five (years-old) when it comes to the party scale. Mojitos in hand, we recorded ourselves on the GoPro, talked about the bar exam (oh, well… three of the four did), and sampled everything the swim up bar had to offer. Someone really enjoyed the hot dogs rather than fresh fish tacos, but he shall remain unnamed…

At seven, we realized that we were hungry again, but had no desire to put any effort into our looks. Therefore, we opted for the al fresco buffet. Sitting in wet swimsuits, we again ate like kings because – ALL INCLUSIVE! We hit the hot tub and listened to a local band sing incredible covers of American songs where all the letter j filled songs were silent.

It was awesome.

:: Maxed Out ::

So here are a few photos from our first evening in Cabo. That is of course, after a day of Aero Mexico arguments.

Remember when we had an issue with an unbelievable delay? That was not the end of our problems. Taylor sat on the phone with Aero Mexico from the time we hit security until the time we boarded the plane. Since we were not taking the original flight, they intended to cancel our return reservation. It was in that moment that I was very thankful to be dating an attorney (who just telepathically corrected my sentence  to include the phrase “pending his passage of the bar exam.”)

Taylor ensured that we had a flight home, and we spent the rest of our week relaxing, laying out near the pool, reading, and someone of non-hispanic descent (clearly not me) got burned. It’s a different sun down there! Fast forward to the end of our stay, as Taylor tries to check us in to our flights. What a surprise when our reservation did not exist! He then spent the good majority of our last day on the phone with Aero Mexico, with no guarantee that we would be able to board the flight previously purchased.

Fortunately, we were bailed out and flown home. Thank goodness – paradise could have gotten really expensive really quickly!

:: Beach Bum ::

We recently joined some of our friends on a post-bar trip to Cabo san Lucas. Three lawyers and a fashion blogger… you can imagine how fascinating the talk about MPRE questions, essay topics, and misdemeanor manslaughter was….

However, in between that chatter, we had a fantastic time. We were quite uncertain as to whether or not we would actually make it to Cabo. In an effort to save a few dollars, we opted to take Aero Mexico. That was our first mistake. We made it to DFW around 5:30 am and immediately jumped into the 60+ person line. After thirty minutes of not moving an inch, we became concerned COMPLETELY FREAKED OUT and knew we would be missing our flight.

As I held down our place in line, Taylor discovered that our flight was delayed from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, causing us to miss our connecting flight and be completely re-routed. As we began making plans for our day (brunch, nap, lunch, nap, wandering around Dallas, and finally airport), we were given the option of taking the 4:00 flight and a connector which would place us *ever so safely* in Mexico City for a night. Um, no.

We bailed, hopped on a direct American flight, and never looked back. After making it through security, Taylor spent nearly an hour on the phone with Aero Mexico, guaranteeing our return flight would not be cancelled. We arrived in Cabo earlier than expected and went directly to the pool to sample what the swim up bar had to offer.

You should also know that the night before our departure, T bought a Go Pro. Of course I scoffed at the idea, but let me tell you – if there is a man in your life, get him one! He was so entertained the entire time, and now we have loads of photos and video from our life-proof case which floated in the pool most of the day. Between the mojitos and sunburns, we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. (Except when M+C thought their license/wallet/credit cards were stolen).

We stayed on the side where you’re not allowed to go into the ocean because, you will die. But we couldn’t resist just running down and letting the waves rush over the top of our feet.

Then this happened…

and I got slapped by a massive wave as prince charming filmed it…

and ended up doing what T refers to as my “weird girl run,” which is really the “I’m soaking wet run.”

This. All of this is so great in so many ways. Happy Tuesday!

I have watched and quoted this so many times that no one thinks it’s funny anymore when I launch into the five minute monologue.

I recently fessed up that while I am never late to professional obligations,  I am almost always running behind when it comes to non-work things. Fortunately, Taylor is great at lighting a fire under me when I am already five minutes behind schedule. Perhaps it’s because I am this girl.

This may perhaps be the greatest announcement of the week.

This home. I die.

When a friend (who shall remain unnamed) read this, she had to ask me if it was real or not…. I’m not sure what that says about our friends, or us.

:: Blogger’s Block ::

Hello my friends!

Long time, no post. However, a lot has been happening and soon we’ll be back on a more regular schedule.

I cannot wait to relay our Mexico vacay (later), but something (other an Aero Mexico issues – again, later) happened in the Dallas airport that really put a bad taste in my mouth. While awaiting our flight, I looked up to see not one , but two fashion bloggers sit down across from me. I had literally started following both of them maybe a week prior, with each having more than 55,000 Instagram followers.

I have 285.

Nonetheless, I was more intrigued by who they were as “normal” people. I felt like a Miss Oklahoma Star (a mentoring program for young girls) as I quietly observed their mannerisms and conversation.

To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. Here were two women who made their lives blogging, writing, photographing, and sharing pieces of their (maybe incredibly staged) days with their followers – making fun of the people who support them. They gawked and “ugghhhhed” over fans inquiring where they got an item, how they didn’t know what Like to Know it was, and generally hating on others. After at least a dozen attempts to Instagram their accessories, they began to board the plane.

Somehow, we were in line directly behind them and it just would not end – they stopped on the jet bridge, required their third wheel (husband of one blogger) to whip out the Nikon, screw on the lens, and take photos of them prior to boarding. This was now annoying everyone behind them, and I questioned why I wanted to be a part of such a high-maintenence world.

In this moment, it all clicked for T. He turned to me and said he had no idea how easy he has it. We only photograph once a week and I buy him brunch and mimosas afterwards. (insert praying hands emoji here)

So, I learned a few valuable lessons that day and had a pretty major reality check. I love blogging and sharing my broke-girl budget style with others. However, I’ll be making an extra effort to be the Glinda of bloggers!
