:: Caped Crusader ::

If there is one trend I’m the most obsessed with, it’s definitely the cape!

I can vividly remember an early dance class – somewhere in the four or five-year-old range. We were allowed (back in that day – encouraged!) to wear our Halloween costumes to dance class. I adored going to dance class for two reasons – the first being that our classes were held at St. Gregory’s University. It was absolutely the most dramatically mysterious and romantic location I had ever seen (from the exterior) and I was certain that I would someday have a lavish wedding on its rooftop.

Kate Middleton totally stole my wedding, but I still get to claim a rooftop.

The second reason I loved dance class was my one-of-a-kind teacher who ensured we felt special (even that mean girl who tried to push me off the stage). She was brilliant and knew that there was just one way to maintain the attention of five-year-olds while waiting in a line – being allowed to practice our turns by wearing a crown on top of our heads.

I would have stood there all day just for that. Anyways, my parents asked me what I wanted to be for Halloween (big mistake) and just like the year I decided I wanted a pink poodle for Christmas (an item which I totally made up, yet Karen still found) – I threw them a curve ball.

Batgirl.

In 1994, there were few female super heroes to dress up as. Boys had loads of options and Alicia Silverstone had yet to make her Batgirl debut. Much like putting on an evening gown or a pair of really well-made shoes, a cape can make all the difference in how you feel.

I recently received a compliment from a man on my cape (he called it a poncho but whatevs). It’s pretty rare for a man to compliment my sartorial selections, so in my opinion – he can call it a cape, poncho or blanket for all I care! When a fella notices something which is covering up your body even more than normal – and appreciates it – we call that a win. I’m sure it goes back to that excellent Betsey Johnson quote.

“Girls do not dress for boys. Girls dress for themselves, and of course, each other. If girls dressed for boys, they’d just walk around naked at all times.”

So laaaaaaaaadies, throw that cape on and go shatter your glass ceiling!

:: I Love You a Latte ::

Being a downtown gal has plenty of perks, especially with numerous, delicious coffee shops on nearly every corner. At Flint, I always begin with a latte on Sunday, and to fill my caramel latte needs, there is a Starbucks a few blocks away in Bricktown. Just within the library is First Edition Cafe, where the coffees have the most gorgeous, intricate designs gracing the tip-top of the cup. Although, my new personal favorite is the vanilla latte from Kitchen 324. I’ve yet to try their Green Eggs and Ham, but the interior is just perfect with emerald booth seating and natural lighting pouring in. Seriously – you will adore it.

Plus, what Sunday uniform is complete without a latte in hand!

:: Blanket Statement ::

With the past WEEK of snow, and the chill it brings, all I want to do is curl up by a fireplace (which I don’t have, but Flint does surrounding their bar) and Pinterest (not sure how they would feel about my flannel pj’s and laptop there…) with a giant blanket (which I’m now wearing as a scarf).

This year at Christmas, my nineteen-year-old sister and my mid-twenties self pretended like we weren’t absolutely dying to open a gift early, but conspired to do so anyways. I opened this scarf, and was SO excited on TOO many levels. Kurstyn thought I’d lost my mind… much like my twenty-second birthday.

Feelin’ 22? I was apparently feeling closer to forty-five. The only thing I really wanted? A crock pot. My sister was mortified. Clearly, she doesn’t remember where her favorite chicken tacos are cooked… Someday she will be twenty-two and soon she’ll understand that when it snows, there are three things you can depend on – Hunter boots to keep your feet dry, a blanket scarf to stay warm, and a crock pot to fill your body with home-cooked happiness.

:: Little Red Riding Hood ::

I have been drooling over capes ever since Gwenyth Paltrow graced the red carpet in the most stunning gown I can ever recall. Not a piece of shimmer, not even a true color – pure white, with a breathtaking cape. Had they allowed me to, I would have worn a cape as my evening gown… but shockingly, it was dismissed instantly.

Since my cape gown dreams were crushed, I added capes of all colors, lengths and fabrics to my Christmas list! I especially love this one because it has an adorable faux-fur trimmed hood – reminding me of the ever so creepy tale which is Little Red Riding Hood. Had Red owned a pair of Hunter boots, I doubt the wolf would have been so keen on trying to take her out! These beauties are not only thick and durable, but I’ve worn them to work two days in a row and they are super comfortable – as long as you’re wearing thick socks. The only problem now is… what color next?!

P.S. I told you I would be wearing these boots all week!

:: Casual Kicks ::

You know when you have an image in your mind, but just can’t find exactly what you’re looking for? That’s me. Basically, every day. I spend more time than I care to admit googling and pinteresting different variations of key words, just waiting for the right thing to pop up. Currently, I’m seeking a variation of midi skirts, leopard high heeled booties, and the perfect oversized sweater.

These shoes? Prime example of my patience finally paying off. I loved the tan/gold variations I kept finding, but with as much as I wear any form of sneaker to begin with, I wasn’t about to pay an arm and a leg on a shoe that I might end up hating in a year. I found an incredible black wedge sneaker with a white sole, but it just didn’t seem right for me. (Such a Goldilocks!) Finally, I just happened to be roaming aimlessly through Kohl’s with my mom and these jumped out at me for a whopping $34.99. Why hadn’t I thought of silver to begin with?! Not only are these the most comfortable shoes I own, but they are perfect for Thunder games and even better as my set-up shoes on the day of events! You might think the wedge would be uncomfortable, but it’s actually quite cushiony and thus far, has served me well. This is a trend I never saw myself succumbing to, but I am SO glad I did!
