:: I Woke Up Like This ::

Any former roommate (or anyone who lived in Pi Phi with me) can tell you that I’ve never been one to leave the house in my pajamas. (except for that one week that I just kept getting sicker and lived in VS pink sweats and a John Mayer t-shirt for five days. The same ones… #college). However, things change.

Disclaimer: if you’re expecting pajama jeans, we clearly are not aligned in our values.

This sweater is essentially a blanket, and is my new Spring transitional piece. I threw it on Sunday afternoon and headed to Urban Taco to enjoy the patio, people watching and sunshine beaming down. After having snow just under a month ago, my brain cannot seem to rewire itself and fathom the warmer temps.

Luckily, wearing a blanket meets poncho meets sweater combo has helped ease that challenge. Rolling out of bed may be easy – time to pick yourself up off that floor!

:: Blank Space ::

I never thought this day would come. As long as I can remember, I have been the anti-Taylor Swift fan. We could discuss this for days – don’t get me started.

The world is clearly spinning backwards, because I can’t stop listening to 1989 on repeat. The. Entire. Album. While my outfit is a slightly different “blank space” than the song is referring to, I have had this sweater on repeat just the same as the playlist itself.

Additionally, have we all been singing about “starbuck’s lovers” since we heard that song? This article proves I’m not alone in the lyrics I’ve been jamming out to.

“They’ll tell you I’m insane…”

:: Rule Breaker ::

No peeking at Christmas presents. No white after Labor Day. No licking the batter. No reading in the dark

Some rules were made to be broken, right? Down here in Dallas, it’s hotter than the Fourth of July. Which is why anyone who tells me that I cannot wear white after Labor Day is probably not meant to be my friend. If that were true, who in tarnation would get married after Labor Day?

Half the people I associate with, which is one of the many reasons we are friends!

So today my dear friends, readers, people from Hong Kong who can’t understand my random slang via Google translate: I challenge you to eat cake for breakfast! Don multiple chains in the name of high fashion! WEAR WHITE AFTER LABOR DAY!

Because, we can.

And be happy – because today is the day that Napa meets its match! Looking forward to sharing this adventure with you! Also – send a prayer up for me on Saturday. Taylor thinks we will actually make it to SEVEN wineries.

I die. Insert boggled emoji face here.

:: Dallas Cowgirl ::

Let’s first clarify that I am not claiming to be a Texan. I suppose it’s kind of like the first time you refer to your college residence as “home,” when on the phone with your mom. You are promptly reminded that the city you currently live in is not “home.” It will never be “home,” because let’s be honest – home is where your mom is.

Now, do I love Dallas? Yes. Surprisingly, I’m far more attached to it than I was to Tulsa, but perhaps have not met it with the same admiration I had for Oklahoma City. To be frank, a lot of that had, and currently has, to do with the exact part of town I get to claim as my little piece.

This little part, my neck of the woods city, has quaint homes, quiet sidewalks, and a dover of ducks. Seriously – loads of them and the cutest ducklings! I’m just removed enough from downtown (too much for me), and uptown (if you’re feelin 22), but a quick run to my favorite shops is not far enough to be out of the question.

People are friendly, everyone has a dog, and no one has seemed to mind too much that I am using their front porch as a photo op. However, I do have one neighbor who runs outside to frighten the ducks off his lawn, only to go back inside as they settle in on his green grass for the day. He then returns to his stationary bicycle – which can of course be seen through the front window

So, here I am in my new cowgirl-esque booties –  fit for an Oklahoma soul who still dresses up as a Dallas cowgirl from time to time.

:: These Are My Confessions ::

I love donuts. Like, will eat a dozen if left alone with the box. My favorite drink is red, red wine. By the fourth of every month, my “shopping budget” is almost always kaput. My only motivation for doing cardio is fitting into my spring/summer 2010-2014 wardrobe watching Game of Thrones. I could be on hoarders if they ever found my costume jewelry collection.

These are just a few of my not so fabulous habits.

Isn’t it so easy to not love yourself? The day we took these photos, the wind was hitting 30 mph, plus it was hot. My boyfriend jeans were looking more “mom” than “boyfriend” and my necklace kept slapping me in the face. Are you really that surprised when I tell you that I wasn’t being my best self? After an unsuccessful go at using positivity to encourage me, Taylor gave in and took me for a Sangria pitcher.

Problem momentarily solved.

The past few months have been full of peaks and valleys (more valleys, and clearly – I wasn’t up to blogging at that time), and I was struggling to love myself. Call it a quarter-life crisis if you will, but I’m back and we’ll focus on moving forward and keeping up the as-expensive-as-therapy-hot-yoga, rather than being dark and twisty. No one tells you that your twenties are hard – but they are! People don’t actually travel Europe for months at a time, or have the money to be social every night, or buy everything they pin -AND, it’s not easy to make friends after college either. My friend Chelsie says it best, so go here for what I’m talking about. Social media gives us this opportunity to essentially “frame” our lives with all the cool places we are going and all the fun things we are doing. But no one posts what they look like when they’re late for work and their dog has had an accident the size of its four pound body. Because life happens.

And so for that reason, I’m giving you my confessions. Because – life! And – donuts!

:: Weekend Wear ::

There are some outfits I wear over and over and over again – and somehow my friends love me enough to pretend that they don’t notice. While my favorite weekend wear consists of an oversized red Hotel Del Mar sweatshirt or my white and pink fancy floral sweats (unfortunately – sometimes together), every now and then I must leave home.

Hence, the boyfriend jeans making their come back! Whether worn with sparkly loafers (which keep my toes toasty!) or a fun heel – these are my go-to’s. Sure, I know they aren’t the most flattering pants on earth – but at the end of the day, prying peeling those skinny jeans off is not enjoyable. You’re in the closet, while your legs get caught up in the attempted escape of the second-skin-like tightness surrounding your ankles, tumbling over yourself and into a wall of dagger-like heels…. Let’s be real – it just isn’t safe!

Then again, how often do we choose function over fashion? I know I’m not the only one who has had a near-death like experience with skinny jeans!

:: Easy Like Sunday Morning ::

Top: Forever 21, Jeans: Gap, Bag: Kate Spade (old, love this one), Shoes: Sole Society (gone, but similar!), Necklace: J.Crew,

There is just something about downtown on a sunny  afternoon that makes it even more perfect than ever. On Sunday we took a quick stroll to Flint for the usual brunch (to play the part of “regulars”) , and I could not have been more thrilled to throw on my boyfriend jeans and flats, as opposed to being layered up like an onion. It was the ideal moment to come out of hibernation, so we threw our cares away (literally) and shared sangria swirls to end birtalentine’s weekend. Of course, we were pretty worthless after visiting Iguana, so there’s that..

This glimpse of spring made me anticipate the upcoming few months so very much. Festivals, food trucks, secret events that celebrate the city and only those “in the know” frequent. These are things I love not only about downtown, but Oklahoma City itself. Not just any city could boast the same level of community and intimacy that we share. Sure, there are plenty of things to do in larger cities but, do you think you’ll run into someone you know at all of those? What are the odds?! Oklahoma City is so special because everyone is connected in some way. Whether they know a friend, or with the size of my extended family, are a distant relative, syncing in such a way is just the Oklahoma spirit. All the more reason to head downtown this spring, just like Petula Clark suggests!

 P.S. Can you believe this sweatshirt is from Forever 21? Good job, Karen. Another great find that I need 5 more of in order to keep it forever. Such an easy piece to jazz up with a touch of color blocking and a J.Crew bauble. These beauts make my life easy…. Easy like Sunday morning!

:: Earn Your Stripes ::

I was born to brunch. It’s by far my favorite meal, for several reasons. During the two years I lived in Tulsa, brunch became T and I’s thing. Since he was in law school, it was more difficult for him to head north, so I added thousands of miles to my car to make it work – typically trekking to the city on Sundays. (I know you’re reading this in the middle of class, so you can’t object to the miles I accumulated during this relationship!) We bounced from brunch to brunch, and I can rattle off the specials or mimosa price on nearly every menu in town. Now that we live less than 150 miles away from each other, we hit up Flint on Sundays. During Fantasy Football season (yes, I know – technically NFL season, but clearly we have to watch multiple different players and not just one specific team), we had to find a place that would give us great food, good prices, a convenient location, a television, and be able to get us out of there by a 12:05 kickoff.

Thus, we found our brunch home at Flint. My personal favorite spot is at the bar, sitting in front of the fire. But that’s because fireplaces hold a special place in my heart. As a child, I used our fireplace as my stage – dancing, singing, and occasionally pretending I was a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader. In college, Josh and I would settle up with our laptops and student organization work by the not one, but TWO fireplaces in Pi Phi, which Mom Mindy often joined us to enjoy. If you ever make it to this little gem in the Colcord, do yourself a favor and order the berry compote topped brioche French Toast, Farmers’ Biscuits and Gravy, and if it’s there – the pancake special. You’ll be so content with fullness that you’ll need a mid-day nap. Aren’t those the best?!

I know we’re going to eat a little more than usual on our Sunday fun days, so here is what I throw on to leave a little room for my favorite weekly tradition!

:: Canadian Tuxedos and Basketball ::

To say this weekend was busy is an understatement. We took off for Dallas Thursday night – with my three bags in tow, one full of just shoes. From North Park and the Dallas Flea to a perfect Nobu dinner and late night high school reunion including Chace Crawford (Honestly, I don’t know why T thought I would be so star struck. He knows there is only room in my heart for one other man – John Mayer), church and a drive back to the city. Of course, we then turned around and ran to our second home, the Chesapeake Arena, to catch the first home Thunder game as season ticket holders! We’ve been on the list for ages, so we celebrated these two special seats of our very own with hot dogs and brew. Really – do you think we could afford a nicer dinner after that kind of purchase?!

Somehow in the cold and the wind, we managed to click a few pics, even though my new sunglasses absolutely did not want to stay on my face. Fans were asked to wear blue for the first home game, and I struggled with an outfit that was comfortable, warm on the walk, cool next to 18,000 of our closest pals, and of course – blue. Then it hit me. What better way to cheer on our favorite team, than in a Canadian Tuxedo?!

:: The Boyfriend ::

Boyfriend jeans. I have been on a search for the right pair for SO long. I’ve tried on dozens – but being 5’2″, I thought they may just be for the vertically challenged. Then I slid on these babies from Gap, rolled them up to see the look with heels, and was in heaven. They are so comfortable, and while I’m not typically a holy jeans kind of gal, I dig the holes in these. Sure, they might be a little too big up top, but that just means they’ll be my Thanksgiving Day pants as well! Bring on the creole butter infused fried turkey!
