:: Old Friends ::

When Josh came into town (Dallas to Oklahoma City to Shawnee), we somehow only had a small window of time to meet, and of course that was in the morning.

I don’t do mornings.

So, I jumped up, threw on my favorite sweatshirt dress, and we braved the Oklahoma winds for coffee and an impromptu photo shoot! Just like old friends, this dress is a staple in life.

:: Tis the Season to be Mary ::

“Well, that’s my name!”

I’m not going to tell you how much I love Christmas. But I love Christmas almost as much as I love smiling.

Smiling is my favorite! – Buddy the Elf, Elf

Thinking about stopping there because you don’t know what’s coming next?

“Where do you think you’re going? Nobody’s leaving. Nobody’s walking out on this fun, old-fashioned family Christmas. No, no. We’re all in this together. This is a full-blown, four-alarm holiday emergency here. We’re gonna press on, and we’re gonna have the hap, hap, happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny… Kaye. And when Santa squeezes his fat white ass down that chimney tonight, he’s gonna find the jolliest bunch of assholes this side of the nuthouse.”    – Clark W. Griswold, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

That’s right – we are going full on Christmas today from the flouncy green skirt to the bow-tie adorned pup. Time to break out the Holly Jolly, trim the tree, and string up glittery garland as far as the eye can see. Light up that house like the Fourth of July and start praying for a White Christmas!

This year we will only be hoping for the movie, and not the actual white Christmas, since we are going the way of Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon with a few Christmases of our own. Luckily, not four, but definitely more than we have ever made it to before!

Then again, how can we not dream of a White Christmas?!

“If you really love Christmas, come on and let it snow.” –Billy Hack, Love Actually

:: Black Friday ::

This may come as a shock to you, but I really love shopping. (Ha!) It is the ultimate challenge – and I especially get an adrenaline rush from searching for the perfect pieces at the perfect prices. Tonight I am certain my mom was proud as I laid out all of the cash back deals on eBates and the discounts being given from Black Friday to Cyber Monday.

Taylor and I shop very differently. He walks into a store, looks at two options, and immediately selects, purchases and leaves with his favorite. I however, will essentially stalk items until I find the best sale, and rarely purchase anything at full price. That just takes the fun out of it!

So, while the truly dedicated are out on Black Friday, I will be sitting behind my computer, patiently biding my time until I find exactly what I am looking for. I’ll also be donning black on black in honor of my fellow shoppers. Good luck, my friends!

:: I Plaid the Fifth ::

There is something about a plaid skirt that just says “holidays.” I feel like I can never break this one out until we begin approaching the Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year’s trifecta!

When it comes to mixing prints and patterns, I think we all know where I stand. Some believe there is a formula to doing this – I believe it’s our inner five-year-old intuition breaking free of the adult norms we hold against ourselves on a daily basis.

In sixty years I’m sure the grandkids will be teleporting back and forth and happen upon this old thing called the internet with my virtual closet from years long gone. When they ask, in their Hunger Games inspired futuristic world wear, what on Earth (or by that time, Mars) I was thinking…

Well, I’ll just have to plaid the fifth!

:: Valentino goes with Everything ::

These shoes are among my favorites. The story of how they found their forever home is another one of my favorites.

When I went to the Bahamas with Taylor’s family last January, we were pretty bummed (by we I mean his mom and I) to only have one day of sunshine out of the five we were there. The boys weren’t too concerned – we were at Atlantis and the casino was able to keep their attention for hours at a time.

Each night after dinner, I would join them, pick a number, and embarrassingly shout for that number no matter if it was one we had a bet on or not. Clearly not my first game of craps, but obviously I’ve always played the same way.

Between the three Robertson men, they are mathematic geniuses, and my preschool math capabilities can’t keep up with their odds-calculating minds. While I always join them in Vegas for the game, I don’t go consistently enough to be all that fantastic. I squeezed between the guys, Taylor’s dad gave me a few chips to play with, and I followed along – being coached the entire way.

An hour passed, two hours passed, and my chips began to rack up. Two hundred, three hundred… we were on a roll! Once I hit the target which I knew was in sight, I stepped back and announced that I was done.

Taylor looked at me a little baffled as to why I would stop – but it was getting late, and I had exactly what I wanted. Enough chips to go home and purchase the infamous Valentino Rockstuds!

:: Highs in the Sixties Style ::

Many, many moons ago, I wanted to be a meteorologist. I’ve always been fascinated by weather, but that’s a typical Oklahoman for you. It wasn’t until I took a Severe and Unsual Weather course in college that I realized my interest in weather would just have to stay that – an interest.

Shockingly – becoming a meteorologist involved a significant amount of math to understand the science, and that was before the big STEM push for girls. So, while weather makes for excellent small talk, I often bring it up because I am just completely amazed at the way it works – particularly in this part of the country.

This outfit is a bit of a throwback to our Napa days (my favorite days ever), but it could easily have been worn here in Dallas when we reached a high of seventy degrees on Thursday. Yet – it snowed on Sunday night.

I like my weather like I like my outfits – unpredictable!

:: Sweater Weather ::

Oklahoma got a snow day – Dallas was just flat-out cold.

We spent (semi-snowy) Sunday recovering from being wedding weekend warriors (think that brings us to lucky number seven this year) and catching up on work. Taylor and I argue over who has the better neighborhood constantly, but Sunday he brought his A game.

Less than a block away, he located the most incredible coffee/wine shop which felt like my little piece of Oklahoma in the middle of Dallas. We walked in and it was perfect. Warm air hit my face and a sea of comfortable couches filled my eyes. The latte was incredible, the football game was playing (silently!!!), and I was in heaven. Plus, any barista who can make latte designs will keep my business.

While it was freezing (literally) out, this sweater practically acted as a coat! In our home, we didn’t wear coats growing up. When you’re heading to a mall, the last thing you want to do is lug around a big coat. So we either required our driver to drop us off (that’s what dads are for) or ran from the car to the door.

If you’ve seen me run, take a moment to soak that image in. If you haven’t, click here.

:: Maxed Out ::

So here are a few photos from our first evening in Cabo. That is of course, after a day of Aero Mexico arguments.

Remember when we had an issue with an unbelievable delay? That was not the end of our problems. Taylor sat on the phone with Aero Mexico from the time we hit security until the time we boarded the plane. Since we were not taking the original flight, they intended to cancel our return reservation. It was in that moment that I was very thankful to be dating an attorney (who just telepathically corrected my sentence  to include the phrase “pending his passage of the bar exam.”)

Taylor ensured that we had a flight home, and we spent the rest of our week relaxing, laying out near the pool, reading, and someone of non-hispanic descent (clearly not me) got burned. It’s a different sun down there! Fast forward to the end of our stay, as Taylor tries to check us in to our flights. What a surprise when our reservation did not exist! He then spent the good majority of our last day on the phone with Aero Mexico, with no guarantee that we would be able to board the flight previously purchased.

Fortunately, we were bailed out and flown home. Thank goodness – paradise could have gotten really expensive really quickly!

:: Beach Bum ::

We recently joined some of our friends on a post-bar trip to Cabo san Lucas. Three lawyers and a fashion blogger… you can imagine how fascinating the talk about MPRE questions, essay topics, and misdemeanor manslaughter was….

However, in between that chatter, we had a fantastic time. We were quite uncertain as to whether or not we would actually make it to Cabo. In an effort to save a few dollars, we opted to take Aero Mexico. That was our first mistake. We made it to DFW around 5:30 am and immediately jumped into the 60+ person line. After thirty minutes of not moving an inch, we became concerned COMPLETELY FREAKED OUT and knew we would be missing our flight.

As I held down our place in line, Taylor discovered that our flight was delayed from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, causing us to miss our connecting flight and be completely re-routed. As we began making plans for our day (brunch, nap, lunch, nap, wandering around Dallas, and finally airport), we were given the option of taking the 4:00 flight and a connector which would place us *ever so safely* in Mexico City for a night. Um, no.

We bailed, hopped on a direct American flight, and never looked back. After making it through security, Taylor spent nearly an hour on the phone with Aero Mexico, guaranteeing our return flight would not be cancelled. We arrived in Cabo earlier than expected and went directly to the pool to sample what the swim up bar had to offer.

You should also know that the night before our departure, T bought a Go Pro. Of course I scoffed at the idea, but let me tell you – if there is a man in your life, get him one! He was so entertained the entire time, and now we have loads of photos and video from our life-proof case which floated in the pool most of the day. Between the mojitos and sunburns, we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. (Except when M+C thought their license/wallet/credit cards were stolen).

We stayed on the side where you’re not allowed to go into the ocean because, you will die. But we couldn’t resist just running down and letting the waves rush over the top of our feet.

Then this happened…

and I got slapped by a massive wave as prince charming filmed it…

and ended up doing what T refers to as my “weird girl run,” which is really the “I’m soaking wet run.”

:: Blogger’s Block ::

Hello my friends!

Long time, no post. However, a lot has been happening and soon we’ll be back on a more regular schedule.

I cannot wait to relay our Mexico vacay (later), but something (other an Aero Mexico issues – again, later) happened in the Dallas airport that really put a bad taste in my mouth. While awaiting our flight, I looked up to see not one , but two fashion bloggers sit down across from me. I had literally started following both of them maybe a week prior, with each having more than 55,000 Instagram followers.

I have 285.

Nonetheless, I was more intrigued by who they were as “normal” people. I felt like a Miss Oklahoma Star (a mentoring program for young girls) as I quietly observed their mannerisms and conversation.

To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. Here were two women who made their lives blogging, writing, photographing, and sharing pieces of their (maybe incredibly staged) days with their followers – making fun of the people who support them. They gawked and “ugghhhhed” over fans inquiring where they got an item, how they didn’t know what Like to Know it was, and generally hating on others. After at least a dozen attempts to Instagram their accessories, they began to board the plane.

Somehow, we were in line directly behind them and it just would not end – they stopped on the jet bridge, required their third wheel (husband of one blogger) to whip out the Nikon, screw on the lens, and take photos of them prior to boarding. This was now annoying everyone behind them, and I questioned why I wanted to be a part of such a high-maintenence world.

In this moment, it all clicked for T. He turned to me and said he had no idea how easy he has it. We only photograph once a week and I buy him brunch and mimosas afterwards. (insert praying hands emoji here)

So, I learned a few valuable lessons that day and had a pretty major reality check. I love blogging and sharing my broke-girl budget style with others. However, I’ll be making an extra effort to be the Glinda of bloggers!
