“Florals for spring. Groundbreaking.”

Perhaps florals for spring are nothing new, but surely peony-printed pants are ready for their moment. I think this is a hilarious play on words, T, however, thinks it is miserable. Writing, much like style, cannot exist with a “one size fits all” mentality though!

Which is also why you will have to forgive me for the less than verbose post today. It’s late and I have been working pretty wild hours, so – goodnight!

Here’s hoping your Monday is warmer and drier than ours here in Dallas – looks a bit different from this clear, blue day!

If there is one trend I’m the most obsessed with, it’s definitely the cape!

I can vividly remember an early dance class – somewhere in the four or five-year-old range. We were allowed (back in that day – encouraged!) to wear our Halloween costumes to dance class. I adored going to dance class for two reasons – the first being that our classes were held at St. Gregory’s University. It was absolutely the most dramatically mysterious and romantic location I had ever seen (from the exterior) and I was certain that I would someday have a lavish wedding on its rooftop.

Kate Middleton totally stole my wedding, but I still get to claim a rooftop.

The second reason I loved dance class was my one-of-a-kind teacher who ensured we felt special (even that mean girl who tried to push me off the stage). She was brilliant and knew that there was just one way to maintain the attention of five-year-olds while waiting in a line – being allowed to practice our turns by wearing a crown on top of our heads.

I would have stood there all day just for that. Anyways, my parents asked me what I wanted to be for Halloween (big mistake) and just like the year I decided I wanted a pink poodle for Christmas (an item which I totally made up, yet Karen still found) – I threw them a curve ball.

Batgirl.

In 1994, there were few female super heroes to dress up as. Boys had loads of options and Alicia Silverstone had yet to make her Batgirl debut. Much like putting on an evening gown or a pair of really well-made shoes, a cape can make all the difference in how you feel.

I recently received a compliment from a man on my cape (he called it a poncho but whatevs). It’s pretty rare for a man to compliment my sartorial selections, so in my opinion – he can call it a cape, poncho or blanket for all I care! When a fella notices something which is covering up your body even more than normal – and appreciates it – we call that a win. I’m sure it goes back to that excellent Betsey Johnson quote.

“Girls do not dress for boys. Girls dress for themselves, and of course, each other. If girls dressed for boys, they’d just walk around naked at all times.”

So laaaaaaaaadies, throw that cape on and go shatter your glass ceiling!

Almost two weeks in to 2015 – how are those resolutions looking?

I rarely make resolutions (failure is not an option, so I rather not set myself up for it!), however this year – I just couldn’t get enough. I started jotting down all of the things I wanted to do and/or improve about myself. Not surprisingly, the list grows miles each day.

One of my challenges for 2015 is to push myself even further outside of my comfort zone.  Sit by the person I am least likely to have anything in common with. Go rogue and choose the restaurant with no online menu available. Sounds small – but it will mean a lot in growing myself this year.

“Whether it’s the best of times or the worst of times – it’s the only time we’ve got.” Time to get to work!

There is something about a classic cheerleader-style skirt (it just doesn’t make sense to call it a “skater” in my opinion – I mean chicken or egg?!) that will always be fun.

I make no bones about it – I adore skirts, and always have. They are just so much more comfortable (unless you are weathering the Oklahoma winds), and I love the way they hit the leg as you walk. All about the movement these days!

While I have a skirt obsession, I find that I really don’t have as many options as I think I do. Tack that on to my resolutions: buy more skirts!

:: Don’t Sweat It ::

Merry Christmas Eve, my friends! I’ve finished up all of my Christmas shopping and plan on picking up T at the airport today to begin what shall forever be known as “A Series of Completely Unsound Logistical Christmas Events.” It’s really all my fault – Christmas is such a special time that I cannot just go to Oklahoma or Dallas, and have convinced Taylor that in a twelve-hour time span we can make it to Christmas with both our families.

There’s a reason we haven’t celebrated the holidays together in the five years we have been dating.

From December 20th to December 25th our schedule went something like this: Drive to Shawnee to Edmond to Shawnee to Dallas to work to Shawnee (insert Taylor’s flight to OKC here) to Oklahoma City to Shawnee to Dallas.

And so, I shall be living in something grey (my go to color of choice these days), warm, and made of sweatshirt material until January 5th. Add a touch of chiffon to the bottom and voila – I actually look put together! All in all, we are really fortunate to live within driving distance of both our families and get to spend the holiday season with our very own clan of Griswolds. How can you stress when there’s that much food, family and eight unheard episodes of Serial just primed for a long drive?!

In a nod to George Carlin – “Don’t sweat the petty things and don’t pet the sweaty things.”

Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals!

:: Old Friends ::

When Josh came into town (Dallas to Oklahoma City to Shawnee), we somehow only had a small window of time to meet, and of course that was in the morning.

I don’t do mornings.

So, I jumped up, threw on my favorite sweatshirt dress, and we braved the Oklahoma winds for coffee and an impromptu photo shoot! Just like old friends, this dress is a staple in life.

Have you ever spotted something and decided right then and there that it belonged in your life?

That’s how I felt the minute I met Taylor, but this dress falls into that category too. I thought it was the perfect Fall/Spring dress which I could literally wear with more things than I can begin to count. Obviously when you are a fashion lover in a non-profit world, this means you have hit the jackpot.

If Heaven is what I hope it to be, it smells exactly like Anthropologie. The store is having a major moment right now and there is little that I am not fawning over. This dress is the perfect storm in my book – grey (my new black), soft, a unique accessory of tassels and a funky cut. What’s not to love?!

While the dress is a hit across the board, I’ve had a lot of mixed reviews on this vest. Say what you like, but if looking like a Sesame Street character means staying warm when your city goes from 90 degrees to 35 degrees in the same week – you might be looking into a full-length version yourself.

:: Easy Like Sunday Morning ::

Top: Forever 21, Jeans: Gap, Bag: Kate Spade (old, love this one), Shoes: Sole Society (gone, but similar!), Necklace: J.Crew,

There is just something about downtown on a sunny  afternoon that makes it even more perfect than ever. On Sunday we took a quick stroll to Flint for the usual brunch (to play the part of “regulars”) , and I could not have been more thrilled to throw on my boyfriend jeans and flats, as opposed to being layered up like an onion. It was the ideal moment to come out of hibernation, so we threw our cares away (literally) and shared sangria swirls to end birtalentine’s weekend. Of course, we were pretty worthless after visiting Iguana, so there’s that..

This glimpse of spring made me anticipate the upcoming few months so very much. Festivals, food trucks, secret events that celebrate the city and only those “in the know” frequent. These are things I love not only about downtown, but Oklahoma City itself. Not just any city could boast the same level of community and intimacy that we share. Sure, there are plenty of things to do in larger cities but, do you think you’ll run into someone you know at all of those? What are the odds?! Oklahoma City is so special because everyone is connected in some way. Whether they know a friend, or with the size of my extended family, are a distant relative, syncing in such a way is just the Oklahoma spirit. All the more reason to head downtown this spring, just like Petula Clark suggests!

 P.S. Can you believe this sweatshirt is from Forever 21? Good job, Karen. Another great find that I need 5 more of in order to keep it forever. Such an easy piece to jazz up with a touch of color blocking and a J.Crew bauble. These beauts make my life easy…. Easy like Sunday morning!

:: I Love You a Latte ::

Being a downtown gal has plenty of perks, especially with numerous, delicious coffee shops on nearly every corner. At Flint, I always begin with a latte on Sunday, and to fill my caramel latte needs, there is a Starbucks a few blocks away in Bricktown. Just within the library is First Edition Cafe, where the coffees have the most gorgeous, intricate designs gracing the tip-top of the cup. Although, my new personal favorite is the vanilla latte from Kitchen 324. I’ve yet to try their Green Eggs and Ham, but the interior is just perfect with emerald booth seating and natural lighting pouring in. Seriously – you will adore it.

Plus, what Sunday uniform is complete without a latte in hand!

:: Marshmallow World ::

Ya’ll. I woke up this morning and literally flew out of bed, yelling SNOW!!!!!!!” at Tallulah. Couldn’t even make out a full sentence. I ran around my teeny tiny apartment, unsure of what to do first. Hot chocolate? Christmas movie? Brush my teeth?  Going out in it was never part of the options. My apartment building is pretty tall, so we watched the GINORMOUS snow flakes fluttering about the sky, as my Christmas lights twinkled atop the window. It only got better as the snow fell behind our holiday-ready Christmas Flamingos. Truly, a beautiful sight.

And then, there was brunch! I bought this sweater sweatshirt (it’s really in between both, so call it what you like) at a J.Crew sale during OU Texas weekend, on a day SO warm that I wouldn’t even allow myself to look in a mirror. As I tried to remove my crimson leather shorts (it was supposed to be chilly), the humidity and heat combined to give me a Ross Gellar leather pants moment. I poured sweat that afternoon like a small town football player during two a days. Slightly different from today’s weather…

As I was searching for a comfortable, cozy brunch outfit, to saddle up by the Flint fire with Sunday afternoon football in front of me – this little gem called my name. What’s even more lovable, is that the crumb-catcher colonial-style collar is actually attached! A miracle maker for a girl who loves the layered look, but is too petite to actually layer THAT much.
