:: South Meets West ::

Two years ago, I spent a summer in the southwest. Phoenix to be exact. And yes – I said summer. Between learning how to be a teacher (that was a process that definitely took more than the six weeks I spent there), the 120 degree heat (very real), and walking through a haboob – it was definitely memorable. The drive down Route 66 is fascinating, particularly the trading posts and travel stops. I have always been drawn to turquoise, but something in the unique southwestern prints piques my interest.  Is it how it is woven? Somewhat abstract? The tradition in the culture? The number of arrows to appease my Pi Phi loving soul? No idea. But when I spotted this beautiful jacket, especially with the arrow, I had to take it home. No doubt, you will be seeing it a lot!

Do you see the arrow on the back? Clearly, I had to have it after discovering that.

:: Chucks and Lace ::

Third grade. The year my feet grew four sizes and I had to stand on the back row of class photos because I was freakishly tall. It seemed as though I would totally follow in my mom’s side of the family’s footsteps as an epic basketball player, and live up to the 5’8″ height, predicted by doctors upon doubling my size as a tot. In order to keep up with my growth spurts (and probably get my paddle boats used to athletic shoes) I owned every color and style of converse they made. Of course, I thought this was the coolest shoe ever because it had my dad’s name and my middle name emblazoned proudly on the side with a star – CHUCK TAYLOR. Legit.

Years later, these gems of a shoe found their way onto the dance competition and pageant circuit. We were clearly new to this whole pageant thing, and a clogging solo had been choreographed for me to “Skater Boy.” (It may actually be titled “Skater Boi,” but that’s beyond embarrassing). When my mom and I set our minds to something, we go all out, and Skater Boy was no exception. Rhinestoned camo cutoffs, a red tank with a ripped fishnet overlay and of course – clogs specially built into a pair of rhinestoned (le duh) converse. As I gave up my last pageant title tonight, this special dance was reminisced about by many of my pageant friends and family.

You can put your kid in sneakers, but they may still only score four points in one season. Doctors can use modern medicine to predict size (I was itty bitty – someone should have caught on) and only hit the 5’2″ mark. You can be too old for pageants and still own that pair of converse clogging shoes. However, I still have a soft spot in my heart for Chuck Taylor’s. When I caught a glimpse of these silver, slightly iridescent beaming shoes – I knew they had found their home.

:: Staley Love Story ::

This past weekend was a whirlwind – but so wonderful, and I’m clearly in post-SD depression now that it’s over! To even begin to describe Bayley and Craig’s wedding would never do it justice. It was truly the most perfect day, with a 4 pm wedding on the beach, an amazing cocktail hour including a sand castle sculptor, and a reception which featured the bride taking over the mic and rapping until the wee hours of the night. Oh, and a photo booth that makes actual photo “booths” look average. Bayley is five years older than me, so I grew up idolizing her, and the Staley’s special day was very special for our whole family. Here are a few highlights, with more being found on my Instagram account @paperdollblog! {Photos courtesy of Carlos}

Before the wedding on Friday, we spent the morning strolling around Orange Avenue, which is down the street from Hotel Del Coronado. It was a beautiful day, weaving in and out of the quaint shops lining the street. My mom and I walked into a jewelry store and this was the conversation which ensued:

Store owner: Are you in the parade?

Me: Um, what?

Store owner: The parade. For Homecoming.

Me: Uh… no? What, who’s homecoming?

Store owner: Are you in a pageant? Your hair is fixed up so pretty.

Me: (HA! I totally thought I was being punked at this point) No, I’m not in a pageant today. What parade?

Store owner: For the high school.

Yep. Still being mistaken for a sixteen-year-old at twenty-four. I hope this isn’t a phase which goes away when I hit thirty! Also, the sock bun has apparently not taken off yet in Southern California. It was nearly eighty degrees, so I was thankful to have packed some comfortable, light-weight pieces to wander around in!

As my dad was snapping a quick pic, I totally got photo bombed. Anyone know this crazy college girl in the background?!

:: Leopard is a Neutral ::

Good morning! I’ve been up since 4:30 am (boo!), but all for a good reason – off to sunny San Diego to see one of my oldest friends, and my role model growing up, get married! Though it was pitch black and maybe forty-nine degrees in Oklahoma City this morning, we’re looking forward to highs in the upper seventies. This ought to thaw out our weather-shocked bodies in no time!

I know I said black is my favorite color, but leopard is a close second. It’s a neutral, according to Jenna Lyons (President and Creative Director of J.Crew), and I couldn’t agree more. Though you can pair it with basically anything, It can be tricky to find the right leopard pieces, without looking like you stepped out of a Limited Too catalogue. (Is that still around? Or did Justice take over the little people population? My PreK students LOVED those bedazzled shirts!) One must be strategic in their leopard selection – and when I saw this pair of linen leopard shorts, I knew I couldn’t leave J.Crew without them. They really do have THE best customer service. And I’m not just saying that because my best friend was a personal shopper at J.Crew throughout college. Though they were on the sale rack, and not a pair in my size to be found, a pair was ordered, I still received my discount and they were shipped to me FOR FREE! Clearly, leopard lady dreams DO come true!

:: Rainy Days and Mondays ::

After the heaviest humidity I have ever felt in my life (and the only day I should have gone sock bun and didn’t at OU Texas), we finally saw rain! And not just a sprinkle here or there, but a thank-you-mother-nature-for-a-ten-dollar-car-wash kind of rain. I was so excited about the drop in temperature, that I totally forgot to don rain boots (here’s where I hint how badly I want a pair of red Hunters for Christmas, or sooner). When I got home, it was too dark (boo, gloomy skies) to snap a few photos outside, so we made do with a building, and a warm caramel kiss from my favorite coffee/wine/chocolatiers in Norman.

:: {Wo}men in Black ::

October in Oklahoma and I’m wearing… a skort to brunch? October is probably the most difficult month to dress for – sometimes we get a Fall, and sometimes we skip it altogether!  Even as a kid, dressing for Halloween was a toss up – would there be flurries or a heatwave? One year it snowed (the year I was probably a dress wearing, feather wig donning Cruella DeVille), and another year it was eighty degrees (the year we were Energizer Bunnies, of course).

On to the outfit! Black is my favorite color. Most people look at me like I’m nuts, but let’s be real – blondes look good in black, and I can pair it with anything. It was such a gorgeous day that I couldn’t resist my new favorite (ok, it’s my only) skort. Let’s see how much more wear I can get out of this baby…

:: Mix it Up ::

Growing up, everything had an outfit. We trekked to Dallas to be dressed up at Animal Crackers, as my dad sat in the single multi-colored chair outside the dressing rooms, clutching his calculator and deciding which outfits and matching accessories would come home with us. It was so simple to dress back then – you knew what went together, no doubts about it. Sometimes, simple is the best way, but I was so elated to wear this skirt for a night out that I was overthinking what to pair it with. A plain black top? Statement necklace? Bright heels? Lamb sweatshirt?

And then I remembered my leopard peplum top. Yes. How could I have made it so difficult? I tucked it into the skirt, layered three shades of pink MAC lipstick (because I think I am a mean mixologist – ooh and because their lipstick just smells so amazing), and headed downstairs. As we snapped a few photos on the way to dinner (bummer the lighting isn’t better!), even my manfriend said this was a new favorite outfit of his. Winner, Winner, Chicken Steak Dinner.

:: Saturday in the Park ::

I often talk about my friends to my other friends, referring to them as “my best friend.” My best friend from Nashville, my best friend from Pi Phi, my best friend from pageants. Typical girl thing, I’m sure. I do have one best friend that is different from all the others. He could be my best friend from high school, my best friend that Instagrams like it’s his job, my best friend that lives in LA, my best friend that’s Jewish, my best friend that leaves me four minute voicemails (that was probably originally of my own doing), but most importantly – my best friend that understands just how important brunch is.

Luckily, my manfriend also loves brunch, so I got to dine at Flint twice in one weekend. Josh was ever so kind to photograph me on our way to the world’s greatest biscuits and gravy and most amazing berry compote topped french toast. It was a cool morning, but quickly warmed up – as Oklahoma always does.
